SHRI SAI SATCHARITA CHAPTER 48
SHRI SAI SATCHARITA CHAPTER 48
The Power of a Sadguru
At the beginning of this chapter, Hemadpant reflects on whether Sai Baba should be considered a Guru or a Sadguru. To clarify, he describes the distinguishing marks of a Sadguru:
A Sadguru is not merely one who imparts knowledge from the Vedas, Vedanta, or Shastras or who performs rituals.
True Sadgurus inspire dispassion toward worldly pleasures and instill a yearning for self-realization.
A Sadguru is self-realized, free from pride, treats all equally, and does not seek service or rewards from disciples.
Such a being is an ocean of peace, dedicating themselves to the welfare of their devotees.
Hemadpant praises his fortune for meeting Sai Baba, whose presence even today continues to guide and uplift devotees.
SHRI SAI SATCHARITA CHAPTER 48
The Story of Mr. Shevade
Mr. Shevade, a law student, once confidently claimed that Sai Baba would help him pass his exams despite being ill-prepared. His faith in Baba was mocked by his peers, including Mr. Sapatnekar, a fellow student. Yet, Shevade succeeded in his exams, astonishing everyone, including Sapatnekar, who began to wonder about Sai Baba’s divine influence.
The Trials of Sapatnekar
Years later, Sapatnekar, now a practicing lawyer, suffered the tragic loss of his only son. Heartbroken, he sought solace in pilgrimages and Vedantic studies but found no peace. Recalling Shevade’s faith in Sai Baba, Sapatnekar decided to visit Shirdi.
Upon his arrival, Sai Baba initially refused to see him, commanding him to leave. Despite this rejection, Sapatnekar persisted, realizing that his suffering might be the result of his own past actions.

A Vision and Redemption
Sapatnekar’s wife had a vision of a Fakir offering to fill her empty pitcher at a well. This vision brought hope, and the couple returned to Shirdi. Sai Baba welcomed Mrs. Sapatnekar with a healing blessing but again rejected her husband. This time, Sapatnekar humbled himself completely, seeking forgiveness for his past arrogance.
Sai Baba narrated Sapatnekar’s life story, demonstrating His omniscience and compassion. Finally, Baba assured him that his sorrows would end, blessing him and promising the return of a child to his family.
The Promise Fulfilled
True to Baba’s words, Sapatnekar’s wife gave birth to a son within a year. They named the child Murlidhar and later had two more sons. Filled with gratitude, the Sapatnekars dedicated themselves to Baba, acknowledging His divine grace and teachings.
